Seasonal Change Detective Book
A Multi-Age Nature & Science Activity for Exploring the Seasons
What changes when one season becomes another?
Turn a favorite seasonal read-aloud into an opportunity to observe, wonder, investigate, and learn!
The Seasonal Change Detective Book invites children to become nature detectives as they look closely at the world around them and discover evidence of seasonal change. Children will observe something that has changed, record what they notice, make a prediction about why the change occurred, and then investigate the why behind their observation.
This resource is designed to be simple, flexible, and low-prepโperfect for homeschool families, nature study, morning baskets, seasonal learning, or a relaxed science activity.
๐ What Children Will Do
For each season, children will:
Observe and record a seasonal change.
Draw what they observed.
Explain why they think the change occurred.
Research the science behind their observation.
Write about what they discovered.
Draw a picture to show their learning.
Complete a seasonal scavenger hunt.
Observe an oak tree and record how it changes throughout the year.
The same activities are repeated for spring, summer, autumn, and winter, allowing children to compare what they observe throughout the year.
๐ณ A Year of Seasonal Observation
One of the highlights of this resource is the Tree Through the Seasons activity.
Children are encouraged to observe an oak tree during each season and draw what they see. If possible, visit the same tree throughout the year. By comparing their drawings, children can see firsthand how plants respond to seasonal changes.
This turns a simple observation into a year-long nature study!
๐ฌ A Simple Introduction to Scientific Investigation
The Seasonal Change Detective Book naturally encourages children to practice the skills scientists use:
Observe โ Wonder โ Predict โ Investigate โ Explain
Children don't simply check off a list of seasonal objects. They are encouraged to ask why changes happen and research the science behind what they observe.
Younger children can draw, label, and dictate their answers, while older children can write detailed explanations and research additional information.
๐ Great for Seasonal Read-Alouds
This resource pairs especially well with picture books about seasons and changes in nature.
Kenard Pak's Changing Seasons Series
Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn
Goodbye Autumn, Hello Winter
Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring
Goodbye Spring, Hello Summer
These books beautifully introduce children to the signs of seasonal change and make wonderful read-alouds before beginning a Seasonal Change Detective investigation.
Alice Hemming's Leaf Thief Series
The activities also pair wonderfully with:
The Leaf Thief
The Flower Thief
The Snow Thief
The Sun Thief
These Squirrel and Bird stories provide fun seasonal hooks for observing leaves, flowers, snow, pumpkins, animals, and other changes in the natural world. The books are part of Alice Hemming's Leaf Thief series.
Don't have these books? No problem! The Seasonal Change Detective Book can be used with any seasonal picture book, nature read-aloud, or nonfiction book that explores changes in weather, plants, animals, or the natural world.
๐จโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ฆ Great for Multi-Age Learning
This resource is designed to work well for families learning together.
A young child might draw and label what they observe, while an older child can research the scientific explanation and write a more detailed response.
One activity. One season. Different levels of learning.
Slow Down. Look Closely. Discover the Science of the Seasons.
The Seasonal Change Detective Book encourages children to step outside, pay attention to the world around them, and discover that science is happening everywhereโeven in the changing leaves, budding flowers, falling snow, and warm summer sunshine.
